Just been talking to Paddles and his Quince and Pear group got me thinking. I know Tradition dictates a group should be of one species, well I want to break with tradition and plant a group of trees that, if they fruited, could be made into a fruit salad. For example, 1 Pear, 1 Apple, 1 Mulberry, 1 Peach, 1 Plum, and 1 Apricot. Then my though process went totally wild whilst I was sipping a nice whiskey and smoking a cigar outside looking at my garden, how about a series of multi-grafted trees in group formations. Example 1 tree that had 1 Lime, 1 Lemon and other tree that had 1 Orange, and 1 Mandarin and finally another tree that had 1 Finger lime, and 1 Grapefruit. Offset by a similar Multi-grafted series of trees that had 1 tree with a series of different varieties of apples, 1 tree that had a series of different varieties of pears, and 1 tree that had a series of different types of apricots and peaches etc. Then my brain really kicked in and I thought does anyone do bonsai vines such as Grapes, Passion fruit, Kiwi fruit. You could do a really miniature fruit salad garden, that would be able to sit on a shelf on your back patio. Anyway please comment, I would love some feedback on my insanity

you'd need it to be a pretty big group... personally I don't think it would work, but it would be fun to try... I've always been game for something strange.. have a go, post plenty of photos.. a thought is, leaf size, species for the graft, fruiting at specific times etc...

No that is a really Crazy idea!
I do now that grapes are often done as Bonsai, and many types of vine are too so no reason why Passionfruit and Kiwi fruit would not work too.

You might have trouble with different sizes of trees and keeping them in scale ( especially in season).

most definitely, am getting about 15 bare rooted fruit trees for my food garden in June, so Ill definitely have good material, and I will be putting up photos for sure

The Fruit Salad tree Company at Emmaville near Tamworth NSW has multi-grafted trees for sale. You can order up to ten grafts per tree and they will freight Australia-wide. I'm not sure about restrictions sending to WA though. They are great people to deal with. The trees are small enough to be able to train as bonsai. I have a couple of six-way citrus growing in pots because citrus trees hate growing in clay though the stone fruit and nashis like it.

Yeah I have actually recently bought two 5 graft citrus trees from the Fruit salad tree company and was very impressed with their work. Their grafts were clean and very well done to my specific orders. I will be going back to them eventually, but the trees were a bit big for a group planting I am talking smaller trees that will be allowed to thicken up naturally as the separate fruiting branches bear their separate fruits.

So hows goes the quest for fruit salad?
