My new collection of seeds of bonsai to be has arrived. I am so looking forward to putting these little babies into their respective propagation styles (the Coastal Redwood and the Japanese Red Maple are going in the fridge for a few months, the rest I am going to wait until spring as I am not sure is the poly-house will be warm enough overnight for a few weeks for me to plant them right now).

I do have a few started plants to play with, and a 3 foot tall bay tree that was used as a cutting starter by a professional nursery It is a bit un-asthetic, but the branches will definitely produce more bay leaves (the trees purpose in life) if they are wired down and out a bit rather than the current vertical growth pattern.

do you plant to wait until spring to sow the ficus seeds?

I also bought some small leaf fig seeds and was thinking of starting a few on a heat mat inside the house.

Yeah Adrian a heat mat would work a treat, I have a young boy in the house who wont leave things alone and we do have 'strict rules' about what happens inside and what happens outside, so growing plants inside the house would just cause him to demand why he cant bring his bunny inside to play . I have a polyhouse outside anyway, and Ill happily wait until spring before I start seriously to grow my babies, I have plenty to be going on with before then. A 5 meter by 5 meter vegetable patch to dig the roofing tile edgers out of and then replace with sleepers in a raised garden format (whoever would use roofing tiles as a garden edger, and then bury them at least a foot deep not allowing for any raised garden). A fifteen meter by two meter long fruit tree garden to dig over and sleeper edge, again in raised garden format for the two dozen or so bare rooted fruit trees of many varieties and multi grafts that are turning up at the end of June. Several air layered Book leaf cypresses to do and then pot out for future bonsai, and the Bay, so I would say my next 3 odd months are very nicely filled up...oh yes and there is all the Jewellery to make .

Jeeze Louise - you are one busy person. how big is your property? I had a great summer harvest of corn, tomatoes, zucchni, lettuce, silverbeet etc. my vege patch can only be a summer one cause it gets complete shade over winter. the other area I get full son is for my citrus, roses, cacti. cymbidium orchids and bonsai stock. I hope to get a bigger house and as we have baby #2 we are bursting at the seams.!
Anyway, I'll try some ficus seeds indoors and see what happens.
