It is rare to find a camellia with anything but a straight boring trunk so when I spied this one 18months ago hiding in the back corner of a local nursery I had to have it. In march '11 it was given an initial styling prune & planted in a garden bed to help speed filling out the design. It has come along well apart from losing a branch on the left, thankfully it has shot a new one a little below it and heading in the right direction. It has set bud so I finally get to see what its flowers are like & maybe even find out exactly which variety it is With other trees in the same bed its a bit hard to get good pics, will try for the right side once the wisteria has dropped its leaves.

hey matt just my opinion but the back you have selected is my prefered front for the trunk line seems to flow a lot more smoothly in my eyes and if your concerned with there being no growth to the right hand side of that view you could easily wire the small branch in place just below where the final large bend is towards the apex. only my honest novice opinion but thats what i would do

Missed your post, the front could easily become the back, while in the ground it is hard to decide a definite front, time will tell where it wants to grow. I don't use wire very often, prefering to use clip & grow methods. Ocassionally I will use some string to pull a branch into position but dont think this will need that treatment.

It has a couple of buds filling out but the first has opened & I now get to see its size, form and colour, I like Does anyone know what variety of japonica this is?
