Air layer practice tree

I bought this Japanese Maple at Parklea Markets in Sydney for $12 and the plan is to use it to learn how to air layer. I have never done an air layer before, but I have made terrible attempts. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I apologize for the terrible photo quality. It's approximately 2 meters high and I plan on doing numeral layers in Spring, I know not to try in winter.

Check out the Wiki page on Layering https://www.ausbonsai.com.au/wiki/index.php?title=Layer
there are some links to some great threads on the bottom of the page that show how to do some layers

Nice idea to get a tree to practice on

Thanks for the responses guys! I knew that you could buy cheap Japanese Maples at Parklea during winter, I bought one last year and I thought it would be good to get some practice and learn something new. Thanks a bunch!
