Can anyone tell me what tree this is and if it's any good as bonsai?
I know they are a common tree as I see them everywhere .

Anth,
That is one of the bipinnate acacias. In your area its likely to be either Acacia dealbata or A. mearnsii. From the pics I'd lean toward dealbata - Silver wattle. Leaves are greygreen rather than dark green. dealbata also has a gland at the base of each pair of pinnae (leaflets) while mearnsii has glands irregularly along the leaf stem.
Any tree can be used as bonsai but whether it would be good is a different matter. It will depend on what you expect of your bonsai. Not sure how they would transplant. They usually have a long root with few feeders close to the trunk. Easily grown from seed and very quick growing. dealbata also suckers profusely from the roots.
