Its time to start lifting some of the ground grown trees and I made a start last week.
Heres some of the tridents. All these trees will need further refinement in many ways.

Hello Craig,

They are some fantastic looking trunks there mate. Could you tell me how long you have had them in the ground and whether or not you lifted them yearly to root prune? How big were they when you put them in the ground. Sorry for so many questions, but I am ready to put a couple in the ground this season and I am keen to learn more.

Steve, the trees have been in the ground for 8 years approx they where 3 years from seed when I planted them out. I like to spend the first few years preparing them for field growing, making sure the roots are nicely spread and the trunks wired for movement and if possible the sacrifice branches in place.
I lift the tridents every year and root prune them quite hard. I think because tridents grow so strongly they must be lifted every year or the root spread gets very coarse. Some species I lift every second year namely beech, magnolia chinese quince and linden. these trees are a bit slower to establish.
Goodness me Alan you have actually but finger to keyboard, I nearly fell out of my chair. The potting mix is approx 50/50 good quality potting mix and diatomite all put through a 1mm sieve.
