Spent yesterday at Kunio Kobayashi's Nursery in Edogawa. Turn up and a young Aussie fella by the name of Sam greets me and takes me into the workshop, gives me a twisting and turning, snake-like Shimpaku Juniper and says "You know what you're doing mate, go for your life!". Mr Kobayashi was wandering around stopping and giving advice to the 7 workshoppers. I was very happy when Mr Kobayashi stopped with me, told me he liked my design, then gave me some advice on how to prune junipers. He whipped over the tree with the scissors in no time, then with lightning speed, double wired a pair of branches for me.

The Nursery is amazing. It is a huge traditional Japanese House, the garden is filled with the some of the worlds best masterpiece Bonsai trees.

Sam has been there for the past 3 months and is in his last week of his study. I can see that the Kobayashi family have been very happy to have had him there with them. He is very enthusiastic and has learned a lot during his stay. He is very keen to share the knowledge he has gained when he gets back to Australia.

In the afternoon I did some work on a customer's tree! Defoliated a big, beautiful Japanese Maple... Was Awesome!

It wasn't Sam from Red Dragon Bonsai Currumbin ? Was it? He was going to Japan at some time.

That photo of Sam is a bit old. I believe it is the same Sam - Carole Waller bought him up to a Bimer meeting early this year and he said he was going over.

Webos mentioned that Sam was in his last week of study.

It will be great if he joins AusBonsai, I look forward to the info he has learnt coming back to Australia.

Yes, Sam did mention Carole, must be the same fella.. Looks quite different nowadays. No Jow, he's not doing a full apprenticeship, he's just in his final week of 3 months of study. I'll send him an e-mail right now and see if he will sign up to the forum. For those of you down south, Sam will be the guest at Geelong's July 9th meeting, all are welcome.
