Just wondering have any of you air layered azaleas successfully? Can it be done? And how large would be to big for a successful layer? Any tips or advice would e much appreciated, thanks :D

Hi Masonc , mate Azalea's ground layer themselvers so air layers or pot layers would be just as easy 'I would pot layer myself as i have had much more success than air layering and its easier .I have pot layered up to 80-90mm Japanese Maples . There is plenty of topics here about various layering techniques with going into a spiel .

Alpine got in before me - again :(
Azaleas very easy to layer. Probably don't even need to remove bark but doing so will probably help speed it up and get roots where you want them. I'd say any size for azalea especially.

Hi Shibui , sorry mate just sitting around doing nothing thought i had better have some input .

Hi Masonc if you mulch around the base of an old azalea it will fill out with roots as long as the mulch is not hot are green material , so size wouldn't be an issue on these plants . If you have the time and material set a layer with the ring bark method and one without . I would be very interested in the final results .

Cheers Alpine

Nice! Will definitely have to show us how that turns out! Around late spring is the best time to apply the layer isn't it?
Thanks :)

Hi Mason, I remember Arthur Robinson writing an article on air layers in our satsuki society newsletter a while back. I'll try to dig it out this arvo when I get a chance. I think summer is the time with azaleas and you cut quite deeply into the wood. I'll get back to you...
