I have slowly watched my Japanese Black Pine deteriorate over the last 6 months. Recentky I bacame concerned in relation to increasing white stuff on some branches and candle ends (forming). After reading on here I suspected Wooly Aphid I last week commenced Confidor and Pest Oil.

Yesterday I dislodged a poor bud end and this concerning nasty turned up.


I originally came upon Fungus Larvae but have since discounted as its on the foliage rather than roots. Now I suspect either Sawfly Larvae or Borer Larvae. Any help in identifying and tips for a fix would be greatly appreaciated. This tree is of great sentimental value to me.

I've been having the same problem on a black pine of mine that I have an air layer going. Been using Confidor also but not seeing any great reductions.

Best advice I have found is to use a strong hose and fire at them. Seemed to work.

Rogor. It's nasty stuff but gets the job done. Mixed with or a mild detergent it's even better.

Hi jow, what is the proportion formula for rogor & its application. is it allowed to get on the soil, or should that be protected. thanks, miyagiman

I spray all my pines with Rogor each month, during Spring twice a month and never have a problem.

I also recommend Rogor and I buy it in a spray can so there is no need to mix.

Please read the instructions on the back of Rogor as many plants have adverse reactions to it. Some citrus, begonias and some figs especially will defoliate or die when sprayed with it.

Hi Guys , i have had these problems with EBP European Black Pines and Westen Shore Pines . I tried a simple spray mist of Coles variety No Name fly spray and simply misted the pines from about 1m away from the plants , within 2-3 weeks the pines were back to normal . I have a similar white substance on some plaited PJ figs , same treatment but the spray may have been overdone as 1 fig has been either burnt of poisoned . The figs i question are on my bit Ishitsuki .

I just mix as per the instructions on the back of the pack. Then i add a splash of detergent to help it get all over the plant and through any waxy deposits. Nasty stuff... cover up and wear a mask if you can.
