I have had my eyes on this tree for a few years & the time has come to collect it. Not that I am overly concerned what species of Eucalypt it is but it would be nice to know for the records. Anyone know?

Not a Euc. expert by any means....but it's foliage does look alot like Gunnii.

Depends what might be growing near by Matt????
Looks like it has had a struggle but is moving forward. How tall is it?
It looks like a Eucy to me, does it smell like one? That looks like some mature foliage sprouting from the top right. Let it grow out and compare to the others growing nearby. Bark and flower capsules would be a bonus for ID but there does not appear to be too much of that on there.
I would have reservations about moving it for fear of it dying but I know little about collecting Eucys.

Hi Matt. i don't know your area well enough to guess.
I find PlantNET a great database for NSW plants. You can search species, genus or area. This link goes to the spatial search http://plantnet.rbgsyd.nsw.gov.au/search/spatial.htm. Just give it the location or a radius from a town and it will list all the plants known from the area. I found 14 eucalypts in 10km from Newcastle - then check the likely suspects one by one.

Damian has already pointed out that the leaves on this one are likely to be juvenile and may be very different to the adult foliage so take that into account when searching. Look at the nearby speacies and make some educated guesses based on bark type and maybe leaves.

Banksia, E. gunnii is endemic to Tasmania so not likely to be in Matt's area unless someone has planted it.

There's not much movement in most of the local euc's so its certainly had an interesting start to life. Being about 4-5' tall it has also been affected by grass fires that went thru a few years ago. I have been right thru the Plantnet lists for my area (using various different parameters) and only have one that is a maybe but cannot find pics of the juvenile foliage. With the recent fire damage it makes the bark less than useful for id. No flowers or seed present either.

This is the largest eucalypt I have attempted to dig & while I am no expert I have a few tricls that will hopefully sway it my way.

Does the tree have any fruit which may help to identify it? I can recommend 2 good books which may also help although from the photo it was a little hard to tell,they are Cronin's Guide to Australian Trees and Australian Native Plants Concise Edition.Hope that helps a little.
