Hi all, I have an unhealthy chinese elm, there are several reasons for the lack of health, and I had thought it was on the mend. now I'm looking at it, and wondering weather to lift it out the pot. the soil at the top of the pot appears loose and root free (I pulled some weeds) the question is, weather to lift the tree, to check if there is any healthy root growth, or leave it be and hope. would lifting it do more damage than good????

If it was my tree I would ...you mention there are reasons for the lack of health ! what are they ?

Now is the time be repotting anyway, so I woud lift and repot anyway. This wil allow you to see theissues if any, but do not take off any roots.

Repot back in fresh soil

Just over 18 mths ago, it was sprayed with roundup... then it was ripped up out of season, despite all this, it was still alive when it went into winter dormancy, and was/is showing signs of pushing out leaf buds... it is definately still alive atm, but weather it survives in the long run??? but given how it's been abused, I feel it deserves a chance at life.... I have some more chinese elms that were ripped up today, and was planning to give them the toothpick method to encourage a better nebari, and was debating weather to do similar to this tree if I am going to lift it, not trim any roots, but ?encourage some roots?

Wow and this tree is still alive !!! it deserves every chance at life after going through all that ...Kens right go for it

there was some small signs of growth, toothpick method'd it, and repotted. firmly tied into pot. no signs of any insect/grub problems
