This was a plant I got with the group mentioned in this thread viewtopic.php?f=131&t=12452&start=15#p131422

I have read they are difficult Bonsai subjects. Has anyone had success? Or is it just going to make a nice garden subject?

As you can see the graft is evident and there is reverse taper with the base skinnier than the trunk! :palm:
I'm wondering about surface layering. Can I try to induce roots at the site of the graft where there is already some flare from the graft?

Mine died. Probably cut back too hard due to not knowing much back then. Being a cold climate pine I don't think it would have had much chance at my place anyway.

Drendrophile Dave, it would be helpful if you put a location in your profile. Even a general one. Advice is so dependant on where you are.... northern/southerm hemisphere.... tropical/sub tropical.... frosts/no frosts..... snow... etc...

I see, yes there doesn't seem to be much bonsai use coming up on the interwebs, shame it's a nice looking pine
(profile location updated)
