Today I performed 5 root grafts on this trident, and for good measure 2 thread grafts while I was at it.

Well done Gezz it will pay 7 fold !!! This will be a rippa little tree in future.

my tip leave them all on for 2 yrs... In the second yrs it is ok to trim back even hard if necessary and then to let some controlled growth continue will guarantee you success. Nothing worse than thinking its ok, then to find out you wasted a year.

Great to see people doing this kind of work. Looking to the future of the tree. I need to get my backside into gear and do more of this kind of thing.

Looks good Gerard

When you use the pins to attach the grafts does it go through the whip or on one side using the collar to hold it in place ?

Pins pass through the whip, (I learned this method from Jow)
Last year I had a couple of these push their way out as they thickened, this year I have shaved the back of the whip to let me sit them deeper onto the trunk. Ideally the pin heads would be bigger but are not easy to get hold of.
Webbos: I am happy to give you a nudge to make better bonsai.
