This is a Japanese White pine fuku-zu-mi , which has become the doner for grafts that i have tried as a measure of testing my ability to take on a different phase of growing unique stock . Having been successful at inarch grafting JBP's in the past i thought i would challenge myself again . Something a little different , plenty of idle time coming up so i thought i would give it a lash . I purchased 6 JBP seedlings from Shibui Nursery Yackandanda and re-potted them . These had a few weeks to settle then i simply removed some healthy unwanted shoots on the White Pine and hopefully done the right cut in the root stock and trimmed the scions correctly ,aligned the cambium layers , applied the tape and will they grow , we shall see in a season or two. I was quite impressed with the ease of how they turned out i lashed out and bought a few more White pines to play withNow all i need is some root stock , i have quite a few European Black Pines so i might just try a few of them . Nothing ventured nothing gained .

looking good alpineart,you will soon have yourself a forest of white pines do you think this method will work on an older white pine that needs a few extra branches on the apex . would be good to try out... cheers.. FEX

Hi FEX , mate the only issue i can see would be the thickness of the bark on the older tree. Getting the cambium layers to line up would a matter of trial and error . I would like to try a few thread grafts between two of each of these tree's . Having two of the same species will make it easier and having plenty of spare branches to use as threads won't be a problem here .

Inarching has draw backs in the union swells quite a large amount . I have had better results carving the wood to embed the inarch deeper into the host lining up the sides rather than the back of the branch .

All trial and error , if they fail its only a small scar and to a pine its not that apparent .

I have seen that people put wet moss on the graft and cover with clear plastic as well. I think you have left that out?

Hi Daiviet , mate i am no pro at this grafting caper . I was taught how to graft fruit tree's as a teenager but never carried on with it . As for moss and plastic bags , all have drawback in different climates . Daily misting of the graft will suffice , the moss attracts little birds here and they will pull on the grafts . Plastic bags keep humidity in and around the graft but a little ray of sunshine can cook the graft even in winter .

I err on the side of caution as i do with all written material regarding do's and don'ts . I have these in sand trays under a pergola so they will have a little humidity , filtered light and spray mist the graft only . When the weather warms up they will go into the green house on the lower shelves again in sand trays out of direct sunlight .

If i had 100 JBP seedlings i would try 3-4 different methods , i don't so i have done it this way . I have to mist my Ishitsuki every day as its indoors until the weather warms up so i will be on the ball with these giving them the care required .

I wish you luck with this. I did some white pine grafting onto a radiata pine tree with the late Jeff Acland about 27 years ago, but they didn't take unfortunately.

Hi Brian , i was thinking of using Radiata , being easier to get hold of around here . I think Pinus Nigra may be a little too slow to take off . They sulk for a year or two after collection but i think its worth a try . I did collect a few dozen 2 year old seedlings a while back , the only issue is the thin trunks will be hard to work with .
