Bending a thick trunk

I saw a tree the other day that had a really nice nebri and great branch ramifacation. The only problem I saw was it had quite a straight bit on the trunk that totally destroyed what could be a great tree IMHO. The trunk was way to thick to bend, so I was thinking, would it be possible to take a wedge out of the trunk to bend it as in the picture below.

I know you would have to line it up pretty well. Any thoughts/comments.

Hi Josh
Yep can be a done and depending on the species, can be easy or hard

and fast or slow. What sort of tree you wishing to do it to?
The one i did using this Technique was the hard and longer recovery of an Azalea. The have very hard wood and do not tike to bend at all.
Happy to say it worked a treat

and if you want a sharp bend is a good method.
check out this thread here

If you want a gentle bend, then you can use another method of hollowing out the trunk and bending using wire as described here

Let us know how you go.

Sweet KC, Thanks for the links. The tree was not not mine but could be

. It was an elm. It has a great base but no real movement till the branches. Sorry don't have a picture. The trunk is really thick and I doubt it would bend so thinking this might be the way to go. Now to talk the guy into selling it to me. It has everything going for it except the straight bit. It just needs a skight bend to make it something.

Elme should be no problem to bend if you cut or hollow out.
Have a look for grant drill out method too
