Hello all,
I picked up this old Pear tree and am looking for your thorts on styling this thing...
If anyone has pics of other pear tree bonsai`s could you please post them for ideas.

I've never seen a pear tree bonsai, but that one looks pretty sweet! Great bark. Try wiring some lower branches down if you can, I don't think you need to work on thickening the trunk anymore so branch development is your goal! haha.

Good luck maybe even try some carving of deadwood if your game.

What a beautiful trunk. What a great place to start developing a Bonsai. I love the flare into the ground, the bark should wether to the same colour in time.

Probably need to concentrate on growing taper into a leader, and keeping the side branching pruned to get more secondaries and keep the branches thinner. If the side branches get too thick it will not help the proportion. You may even want to consider chopping the trunk lower to the rough bark so only the new leader will have the smooth bark. You may even want to do some carving.

Can you post some shots from different sides so we can get a better look?

beautiful stock! this is definitely a tree to get excited about, great movement and bark.
just needs the branch development to compliment that powerful trunk line and base.

Outstanding piece to work with it will take some time but should be lots of fun.
Here is my manchurian pear, an entirely different tree not likely to give you any direction at all.

Lovely trunk and be interesting to see what you do with it. Lots of branching on each of the bends / direction changes to use in the final design i fyou want to go with a traditional informal upright.

ps i am amazed that no on has sid it yet....
You really need another one, Then you will be have a Pair of Pears !

A stunning start and it has huge potential. A question, is it a Manchurian ornamental if so no fruit but great Autumn colour.

Excellent base. Please consider planting it in the ground to grow a long, thick leader that comes close to the girth of the base that you have. Cut that back, and do it again in decreasing stages, so you don't have a massive trunk disappearing into weeny little branches all of a sudden. You can build taper this way. It takes longer, but will give you a powerful flowing trunk. You can use the time to refine the roots as well. The clusters of branches coming off at one point need to be reduced to just the one, and that one aimed where you want it now, while you can.

First thoughts.....your style is already there- informal upright....not sure how much luck you will have changing the shape of the trunk...unless you undergo major renos...I have a very similar tree but heaps smaller. I have had it a few months and still trying to figure out the best way to go with it...but like yours the trunk is fairly chunky so for now can only dedicate my creative thoughts to the future of the branches....

If you look hard enough you will see a fair bit of variety and styles in pear tree bonsai on the web...

But I think you should consider hitting up the markets....take advantage of the tree as a bonsai (super sexy colors ) and as a little pocket money machine. You could easily farm pears and sell!!!

Good to see more pears springing up! Maybe we can all change the saying of 'going pear shaped' to a good thing!!!

I have been feeding this Pear weekly and its been growing like mad!
It had its 1st basic wiring about 4 weeks ago and had to be rewired today as the wire had started to bite in already - it was also the perfect time to wire the secondary branches as they had grown about 80-100mm long on the lower part of the tree.
I am very happy with how quickly this tree is developing and hope to pot it next winter.

I had a chance to play with this one today, it was potted last week and totally rewired today.
I am happy with the result so far, considering it was a bare stump less than 12 months ago.
Still a long was to go the achieve mature looking branches though.
