Hey all,

Thought I would post a couple of images of my Trident Maple in broom style. It was extremely root bount, to the stage where I could barely even tease the rrots out so I bought out the saw. I ended up chopping off about 1/3 of the roots cleaned up the surface and teased out as many remaining roots as possible. After a repot and a good long soak in Seasol its hopefully should be sweet.

I really need to encourage some additional surface roots growth to produce a better Nebari. I have made a few scratches into the cambium layer just under the soil surface and treated with hormone powder. I'm hoping this migh promote some additional roots that I can use? Has anyone had any success in doing this at all?

Anyway I gave it a slight trim and a re-wire, hopefully it will start producing a nice tree. The framework is there but still needs a lot of work and refining.

Where did you source this tree from originally?

Cheers, I bought it as a 8ft tree from a nursery at Nelsons Bay. I think it has closed down now though. I trunk chopped it about 5 years ago and kind of neglected it for a few years. I am paying the price now with trying to reduce and sort out the roots. I guess I was scared to chop to much off back then but I would have done things different now. Hopefully with time I will get it looks good

did you specifically want a trident broom style -there looks to be a lot of possibilities and some real potential for a more shaped tree-tilted one way or the other

Alwas had in mind a broom style for this tree. I'm probably looking at refining some of those larger leggy muddle branches but am waiting for the tree to fill out to see what shape it takes on. I'll understand there probably a few different approaches I could take but I think I will stick with the broom for this one.

What were you thought on other styles out of curiosity? I'm always interested what other people can see in your trees

Hi Ryan, When trimming for traditional broom style, keep in mind that all branches should be perpendicular or at most at a 45 degree angle at least in the bottom half. From there up they should radiate out with no abrupt angle changes or major cross overs. Have a look at some great brooms to see what I mean. Yours is a great looking tree, I look forward to seeing it refined.

Also traditionally broom style should be done with deciduous species, which you have done, for viewing in winter whilst bare.
Personally I can't see the point in doing figs and other evergreens and calling them broom style. If it's a mess at the top of a stick---we'll call it broom. If it's a long skinny thing with no branches -- we'll that literati. If it won't fit into any other style -- Hey: we'll call it an informal upright.

Anyway out of curisoity I found a photo taken almost 3 years ago to this date. I think the tree has developed nicely in the 3 years I just wish I paid more attention to the branches. Its hard though as I d=find you dont really get to see the brach structure till winter.

That is progressing nicely. A difficult subject broom style, especially when you have to start pruning for ramification. There is a great article in Gordon Lewis's book .."The art of Bonsai design" on Broom and well worth a read. Look forward to its updating
