This is a street tree in front of my house in Padstow, Sydney. The local streets are full of them, as well as one growing in my back yard. There are also, in the next street over, some very similar trees but with paper bark.
I have just taken some cuttings off this tree, and will attack the nearby paper barks next.
Mature leaves to about 50mm in length.

Callistemon viminallis is my guess.
Captain cook is a named variety of this species but I am not sure how you tell Captain cook apart from the straight viminallis. I thought captain cook was a shorter tree to be honest.

So, following up on the suggestion of C.Viminalis, I found this.
http://www.anbg.gov.au/gnp/gnp12/callis ... nalis.html
which states that it is a quick grower, which I would expect for a street tree. It also states the Captain Cook variety is a dwarf 1-2m tall. So it's not that one.
Might try some air layers from the one in the back yard.
Thanks all.
Amanda

Hi commanda, I'm also inclined to guess C. viminalis though I'm certainly no expert.
The ones with papery bark may be
this.

Waltron,
Thanks for that. I'll have a closer look for some flowers tomorrow when I walk the dog.
Callistemon Salignus.

G'Day Amanda - air layering is a much better way to propagate as you get that wonderful bark straight away. I have successfully done 3 air layers on a tree in our garden. They just seem to take a while to callous, so stick with it - they can be done

Easy to airlayer and I have done up to 2" easy. Up to 4" layer should be no problem either.
Never had any luck with cuttings tho.
