Hi all, last year I put down a few different seed varieties with great success the only problem I had was with my Sequioa and silver birch seed, although I had good germination they'd only get a few cm's high then drop dead, not sure why this happened, the only thing I can think of is maybe they were too exposed to the elements, anyway I was going to have another go with them this spring was just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on why this would happen.

Hi Ozzy , damping off it usually the greatest killer of seedlings .If the stay to damp close to the stem they simply wilt and die . On the other side of the coin they can dry out very quickly and again wilt and die . Try 4 separate trays in different conditions , 2 in the elements , 2 in a controlled environment , out of full sun and wind , keep 1 of each on the dry side and the other moist . Sooner or later you will work out which is the best method as your environment is different to mine and probably many others on here . Hope this helps .

Yeah i would have said the same as Alpine, no one has the same conditions and even just in your yard it can be different.
Im doing cuttings at the moment and am finding some parts of my yard are better than others.
