Morning all.

Has anyone ever tried growing a Dogwood (Cornus) as bonsai?
I picked one up from a bargain bin a couple of months back, always wanted one since seeing them as street trees in Osaka.

Mine is now in full leaf so I am guessing that I have to wait till end of summer befor I can do anything to the roots. Any pointers are much appreciated ;)

Damian, I think that leaf size and inter-nodal spacing might be your enemy with Dogwoods. craigw60 knows a fair bit about them as garden plants and I wouldn't be surprised if he has grown them in bonsai culture.

Cheers,
Mojo

I remember when bill valavanis was here he talked about his collection and dogwoods are among his collection. He was surprised that a lot of the member at the demo did not know what they are.

Hi Damian,
I also picked up one last year at a closing down sale.( Cornus Mas ) It had a nice curve and flare at the base. The main reason i took it. It was in leaf so i trunk chopped and started growing a new leader. This winter i root pruned ,i found the roots to be ok, many roots to choose from and not overly thick. Thats about all i can tell . Not really helpfull i know, once again a new learning experience.
Good luck, cheers John.
