Hi There...

First post on the boards and I'm itching for some assistance to properly identify some of my trees!

1. I presume this to be some sort of cypress and this one is around 4-5 years of age...
Hasn't been that healthy from time to time and likely cause I don't know enough of how to care for it!

2. These I've had for a couple of years and never really been that fond of them but hey almost every tree starts to grow on one with age...
Is this some sort of an ash?

3. Next couple are only a tiny little fella that was coming out of the brick cracks next door...
Is this a flowering cherry?

4. Last 2 pics are of this "sprucey" kind of specimen?
I've actually had this for around 10 years although neglect and lack of knowledge has kept this tree still very immature in consideration of how old it is...

Pic 5 looks like a desert ash, 6,7 and 8 I'm guessing but is it a Peyton's green or cypresses torulosa. Sorry about botanical and common names.

I did pick this up from a nursery if I recall a few years ago and that link I just posted almost certainly provides a positive identity.

Welcome to the backyard. Can I suggest that if you are not in a local club you should join one? Lots in Melb. Lots of crazies close by...

At a guess, pix 3 and 4 might be Hibiscus syriacus - look around the neighbourhood to see if there are the simple purple flowers in summer.

3 & 4 birch or alder?

Having originally thought that pic 3 and 4 were a flowering cherry and now looking at the birch, alder and hibiscus options I think the flowering cherry can almost be crossed out.
This is regardless of the fact it sprouted directly beneath one!

Alder and birch still a good chance although I have no idea where they might have come from!
Hibiscus is mildly possible (massive old one next door) but I think the leaves are quite different - I'll double check this option when I get a moment.

Ken, I am not disputing your belief of the sargeant juniper however I would be curious as to why you seem so certain?
I was clearly somewhat convinced that it was the cypressus?

To clarify this plant originated from a plant nursery and not a bonsai nursery so either residential grade option seems feasible to me..

I would have to agree with Ken on pics 7 & 8 'Juniperus sargentii' or Shimpaku ,
'Cupressus' foliage usually has more obvious branching. 5 & 6 probably Flowering ash 'Fraxinus graffithii' 3 & 4 definately birch 'Butula pendula ?'
1 & 2 maybe Dwarf Alberta spruce 'Picea glauca ' Conicle" chris

Hi Boics , try a Google on these , its difficult to I.Dfrom a small amount of foliage but at a guess
1-2 Picea Albertainia
3-4 Silver Birch
56 Ash English or Desert "Black buds" are the best clue
7-8 Juniperus Chinensis -Blue or green - digital camera's can make green foliage look blue

I'm thinking that the Picea glauca Albertiana "Dwarf Spruce" is likely on the money...

Indeed I think that Silver Birch could be an option...
The leaf shape is near too identical however knowing Silver Birch it is certainly a little more rough to the touch...

Once again I have no idea where this one might have flown in from now but I'll be sure to keep an eye on this..
As the plant matures I'm sure it will provide some more key identifying features...

I think we might be close to agreed that I have some sort of ash...
