OK, simple question. Can you threadgraft a cork bark elm? I have just tried one, and am wondering if it will be a success.

Yes Andrew you can, I have seen it done successfully in both late winter and summer.

Why would you not be able to

While I have not thread grafted a corky elm, my first attempt at approach grafting was a corky bark Chinese elm and was successful. These are just like other trees - phloem, cambium, bark - no reason they will not graft using any method.

Thanks for the replies fellas. Why not? Well, I thought that the corky nature of the bark may prove to be a problem in getting the two sections to fuse. Thanks for the clarifications though.

no problem with them done, have done 4 all with succuss just make sure that the graft has bonded which is pretty much telltale when the insert branch is thicker on the graft side than the inserted side. never had to remove bark etc
