Hi All.
Bought this form the SA Bonsai show on Saturday, wonderd how you guys would suggest styling it? I'm not sure if it would be best as a clump, or just a single trunk. Obviously the front will need carving and hollowing, but after that, I'm a bit stuck.
Any help, much appreciated.

Mate, if that were my tree I'd do a few Shohin sized tree's using the branches coming off the main stump.

The reason being - I'm a wierd kid.

Otherwise the other "trunks" should be copped, a leader selected and a formal/informal upright born. Up to you mate.

Nice butt, but...

All the trunks are quite straight. If you cut them back to the first or second interesting angle, and regrow them long and strong (cut back, regrow, cut back) the trunks might match the butt for strength and character. This will take time, but the butt is certainly worth the extra effort. Ground grow or large grow pot, lots of fert, don't worry about ramifying until you've got some serious thickness to some short, angular trunks.

The two trunks on the left don't really relate to the rest - if (after thinking about it) you cut them off, you'd have a dead side to the butt, and the tree growing out behind the other side - if the trunks were regrown to reflect a harsh wind coming from the dead side, it might tell an interesting story.

Its a grand tree waiting to happen, certainly. Take plenty of time to think about it.

MoGanic- Think youre my kind of weird, that was my initial feeling when I saw it.
Gavin- That's an interesting idea. I like the thought of the windswept look, something I don't yet have.
Olivecrazy- Ill post some other angles as soon as I can.
Andrew- I bought it beacuse my initial reaction was that the stump had character and good proportions. My first thought was that it would make a good multi-trunk/clump which I haven't tried before. It was only after staring at it for an hour or two that I felt it could have other directions. Plus, I love Olives.

The oliver looks like its got a really nice trunk. I take it that that will be the front? If I've looked at for an hour, or so, the first picture I take is of the front.

My vote is for a single trunk.
The reason being that half way up it has a 'waist' were the trunk narrows and I would try to reflex the shape of the trunk into the shape of the canopy throught the point where it narrows. I can only think of the light refraction drawings I had to do in highschool physics to explain what I mean but just two triangles meeting piont to point is all I mean.



I do have alot of wind swept trainer bonsia and they are fun.
