Bougie in development

Hi,

This is my bougainvillia that I doug from a garden about 4 years ago. It has been recovering for a 3 years and in the last 12 months I have started to get the branches placed where i want them!

Please feel free to cut this one to pieces. I am up for all critique that anyone can throw at it.

ya doin a great job there jezz but are you getiing the rate of growth you would like in that pot. btw nice pot. is the 1st pic your front?

Yeah 1st pic is the front.

As for rate of growth, in the last 4 weeks it has put on about 40cm of growth while all my other trees are at a stand still. So i feel that come spring it will go completely mad.

But come on, I am sure you have a styling idea? But dont suggest cutting the trunk off at the first branch

I would only rule out the bum shot as any possible front. Wisteria are fast growers so it is possible this pot could be sufficient for further refinement. But if that is the case I would move on to a pot that suits the tree so styling decisions can be clearer. I would suggest a terracotta pot as another option.
Not sure I can give any styling advice that you would not have thought of yourself. I have a 100 year old wisteria stump that has become two separate chunks of deadwood about a 1/4 the size of the original trunk and I am a couple of years of making styling decisions for them. Maybe I will ask you then

Edit: bugger I just realised we are talking about a Bougie Hmm never seen such a lean on a Bougie before. That seems intresting.

The 1st Pic is my front. 1st Lh branch should be the first and allowed to develop into a pad now, The Lowest right one I do not like and would remove. The next up is a distsnct branch and the rest makes up the apex foliage crown

Hi guys,
to me this tree gives the illusion that it is going to fall out of the pot.
The reason being that the first LHS branch is pointing upwards.
To counteract this, tilt the tree another 35 degrees to the left then wire the bottom LHS branch a bit further down to follow the trunk line.And YES remove the bottom RHS branch
You can then design your tree to a more balanced style
Remember to keep trimming the shoots to increase ramification

Thanks for the replies guys, means alot to me.

I will be standing this guy up about 20-30 degrees in the next repot just before spring.

Once that is done i will look at the branches a bit closer. if i tilt the tree up the first banches become bar branches so one will probably be removed.

I agree that the RHS branch needs to come of though it may leave to big of a gap.


Anyway afer the repot i will hopefully repost and the you can all give some more feedback.

Yeah stretching it's legs, thinking a hexagonal for the next pot. With a yellow glaze, will need to be commisioned I think ;(

Hi Petra, I did it cos I was bored on Sunday.

But it does have some beneficial purposes. Firstly It makes it easier to wire. Secondly it gives me the ability to see the branch structure properly. Thirdly it helps this guy back bud and produce smaller leaves.

Hoping to see it flower as the leaves come back also.
