I was passing through the south of Sydney on the weekend and a little birdie told me that Leong @ Bonsai south had some sifted 2-4mm scoria.

I went to check it out and it looked the business so I bought 3 bags. So for anyone wanting to give Boon mix a go, you can now get all three main ingredients commercially in Australia

Now for the bad news...the bags were $20 for a 10kg bag...which is pricey (more than Akadama, which comes from Japan!), BUT it was sifted, usable straight out of the bag so kind of like buying loin over rump, you get to use every little bit!

I have had great success using only Akadama and Pumice, so I'll trial 1/3 parts next season.

Washed to remove surface powder but unsifted straight from the bag.

Hi Scott,
I found some fine red scoria at a garden center (Daisy's Ringwood for melbournites) earlier this year and was able to incorporate it into the second half of my repotting. Unfortunately it doesn't come pre-sifted, and after sifting out the fines I ended up with a bit less than half (usable) of what I paid for. Still it was only (from memory) about $8 a bag (approx 30L) which they shovel out from one of the bays, so you could get a trailer load (if needed) too.

No one up here has even heard of Scoria let alone stock it ... there are some things I miss about Victoria

Is it Red or Black ?
About 2 weeks ago I saw some scoria that was black I always thought it was red

Yes scoria can be black - the stuff (or rather tuff) that comes from Mt Quincan on the Atherton Tablelands, Queensland, can be anything from dark blackish grey to a dark reddish brown. It is commonly available up here in many graded sizes direct from landscaping suppliers.
