Yes Ken, Ray's tree won the "Most Popular Tree" as voted by the public.
I didn't take any pics. I only had my phone camera with me, and I know that Pat hates the pictures it takes, so I didn't take any.
I will give you a quick run down on the show as described by Mike W. from the Canberra Bonsai Society in their December Newsletter:
There were 29 displays from the following organisations:
Australian Plants As Bonsai Study Group
Shibui Nursery / Albury Wodonga Bonsai Society
Sydney City Bonsai Club
Canberra Bonsai Society
Illawarra Bonsai Society
Ray Nesci School Of Bonsai
Bonsai Art, Sydney
The "Public Vote" saw the following trees selected as the "Top 5"
tistaniopsis laurina - Water Gum
eucalyptus camaldulensis - River Red Gum
callitris glaucophylla - White Cypress Pine
eucalyptus nicholii - Peppermint Gum (Group)
banksia marginata - Silver Banksia (Cascade)
There were 2 demonstrations, I did one on a westringia, and Roger Hnatiuk did the other, I am not sure what his demo was on, as I did not see it.
Cheers,
Leigh.

You have got to be kidding! Not a single picture from anyone from down that way! I am amazed, stunned, and disappointed to say the least.

Hi Peter,
There are pictures. The CBS Newsletter has pictures of the top 5 trees in it, but the letter is posted on their website in Adobe format, I couldn't figure out how to download them so I could put them here. I am sure there are a few people with pics out there, but they may not have visited this site yet.
Cheers,
Leigh.

Hi Peter,
There are a few "forum lovers" here in Canberra, I am surprised they have not jumped onto it.
When I found out about this site I sent a note to member's of "The Executive Committee" of the Canberra Bonsai Society to let them know, I have not had any feedback from them yet.
I also have a note in my monthly newsletter, which gets sent online to over 1000 email addresses, I bet there are a few Canberra addresses in that list. Surely someone who knows of this site also took pictures at this show. I guess it is just a matter of time......
Cheers,
Leigh.

The winner of the 'peoples choice' at the 6th NEOAPAB (National Exhibition of Australian Plants as Bonsai) was Ray Nesci of Ray Nesci Bonsai Nursary with his Tristaniopsis Laurina (Water gum).
Today I visited Ray at his nursery in Dural NSW to have a look at the tree and find out a bit more about it.
Tristaniopsis Laurina
Water gum
The tree was grown from seed which was planted in 1993. Ray first styled it in 1998.
This tree grew steadily for around 9 years and then developed some rot in the trunk as a result from a cut not being sealed. Ray decided to carve it out and went even further than the rot and hollowed out the trunk creating a really nice feature. Unfortunately neither of these photos show the detail of the extensive carving which really adds to the aged appearance of the gum.
Tristaniopsis’ foliage will greatly reduce through defoliation, which Ray carries out in summer. It has attractive bronze new growth and then through the season it matures to green. The bark also greatly contrasts from young maroon stems to a white mature bark, which starts to peel away with age.
Tristaniopsis have small yellow flowers but they aren’t readily seen on bonsai because of the constant trimming.
Ray repots this tree annually in either March or August.

I will have pictures of more of the tree's from the show shortly.

Steven
