another of the trees i posted for sale which didnt sell. so i thought i shud see if i could do anything to make me want to keep it.

again i decided to style as small shohin accentuating the excellent flair of the nebari and create a tapered trunk with a small amount of movement.

It is marvellous what you can do with a tree after failing to pass it on.

Why is it so?
Is it about revisiting the tree? It doesn't work with old Flames, I only tried that once!
Maybe its a fresh mental approach out of sympathy.

I would suggest you won't be trading this any time soon.

Great work Jarryd. I personaly would slightly stretch out/straighten the new leder slightly. I guess it will even out as it fattens but I still feel I would straighten slightly. I have only just started working with privet I think they will be alot of fun.

my avatar is another privet that i styled a few yrs back i can definantly see the similarities in the virt you have done. however i can guarantee you these trees look very different to one another the avatar privet is about 4 times larger then this little tree although it is still not a large tree this one is just very small

soltan working with privets is great fun it is the predominant tree species in my collection. i collected an excellent yamadori privet yesterday from a friends cow padoc. where most of them come from. it has great potential. i will post pics as soon as i have it all potted up.

I had one that came up in another pot and I thought for almost two years it was a fig that had grown as a cutting from an off cut as I was sticking them everywhere and forgetting.
They are tuff buggers I shoved it into a little pot for a local garden club demo we did. This was a month or so ago and It had only been transplanted about 5 months before that. I was expecting it to stress out a bit but although it has not sprouted out again yet it looks as healthy as ever. Being a bit rushed and nervous it is sitting too high in the pot. I might put it back into a grow pot in spring.

to keep this tree as happy as possible keep it in dappled shade and water heavily and also feed heavily with organic fetiliser. if you cant keep the tree in dappled shade make sure to put some cloth over those surface roots as privets will often get sunburned roots wich causes all kinds of health problems and also you have to rebuild nebari or redesign the tree around out,

with your branches i feel you should add a little more wiggle in them and as it thickens this will become more natural looking. privet branches are very flexible. i defoliate my privets twice to three times a yr to reduce leaf size and increase ramification.

How do they take the frost? It can get as low as -4 here I am undecided whether to put it in the shade house or not yet. I might cover the roots for winter but I should have them back under ground by spring.
I plan on reducing those branches right back once it starts growing again. Since you mentioned it, looking at it I may have to go right back to the first internode on that left branch as the next internode is too long.
I am looking forward to working with it should be fun.

i dont really know how they cope with frost. we dont get much of it up here.

i knwo the chinese privet is semi deciduous. so i asume they can stand colder climates. if anyone wants yamadori privets send me a pm and i will see what i can find just tell me how big and how thick. am happy to just trade for other stock.
