Happy Saturday!

Today I thinned out my Japanese Maple.

The view is rather boring and I am contemplating a new direction (in winter) as i don't see a great tree at its current position.

I could work with the left 2 upright branches and redirect the trunk angle though it might come at the expense of the base?

Or I could try and work the opposite side being the right. Better still I could read about peoples views and experience with maples.

A good example of a tree which had a nice trunkline but has been "let go"
Too many heads and straight upright trunks/branches
Ideally you would reduce to one trunkline but that depends on how long you wish to spend developing the tree.
With this one you could consider a dramatic cut back. (but I would do that in winter)
You could remove one or two or even four branches now and see what it looks like when it reshoots.

2 chops for the time being and I still got to remove that dead piece and few others too.

What do you think? View 1 or 2?

personally i prefer pic 2 but would also lose the "middle" branches as shown in my dodgy paint virt. just my

when saw th first photo, my first thought was to tile to the left, then saw your rotated version and smiled

Haha first time anyone has done a virt' on my trees.. appreciate the time and effort guys.. I got give this concept a try myself sometime as it is handy!

Ken, as I was unaware of your virt as i was scrolling down then up before the first virt, I thought you had just copied my tree and thought wow strange is that my tree then I realised what you had done.

Will strive for this.. appreciate it!

No worries Speci. Doing virts on a tree is a great way to visualise the outcome of an idea.
If you are like me and cannot draw for peanuts, it is the easy way out
