Hi all you Crepe Myrtle growers out there ,I have been offered 3 quite large stumps that have been cut right back just above the ground and are starting to shoot ,what are the chances off a successful dig at this time of the year(I know spring would be better) but the people want these trees gone now, as it would be quite a job getting them out I don`t want to waste my time if there is less than a 50% chance of survival, any tips or advice would be welcome please. :fc:

What would you have to lose? Some spare time?
Go for it mate.
Pack some sharp cutting tools, a hand trowel, oh and a decent chunk of patience and caution.
Good luck and don't forget the aftercare and pictures :tu:

Better than 50/50 chances they will survive. I collected several at xmas a few years ago, they all powered away. They were cut to stumps at the time so not sure how well the regrowth will handle it but if you reduce that to a minimum they should be fine.

Hey Reddog,
I reckon you would have a better than 50:50 chance of the Crepe Myrtles surviving. All that you have to lose is a bit of blood, sweat and maybe tears.
Even better still, buy the missus a nice shiny new spade for Christmas and tell her that you'll take her to the rest of her present while you go to the pub with the mates.
Good luck and let's know how it goes. :fc:

The dig of the "crepe myrtles" sound an excellent idea. With the current weather, I don't think there would be any problem of survival. You have to take a chance when the opportunity arises.
If I were the "missus", I'd be pleased to receive any spade, old or new but I certainly wouldn't like to receive a broom with a broken handle for Christmas. It might just give me splinters.
