So who has started/ done their de-candling?

I did most of my trees today with a couple of smaller trees to be done next weekend. I find that early to mid December works out to be a good time for Melbourne, although i know that in other parts of the country this timing has to be adjusted.
Have others de-candled yet?

I only have one pine... Just seeing how it goes for a while before I get more... I did mine about a week ago... But I'm only new to pines so it's a bit of an experiment!!

One of the trees i did. I am looking forward to wiring this tree this winter and the next 3-5 years of refinement.

After de-candling and removing a couple of branches.

Yes did that about a month ago. Now I am looking at pulling needles. I test my pines every week by pulling a few needles and when they come away easily without pulling off the bud, then its time to remove 50% of the pine needles from the tree.
Some people here may disagree with my timing, but I have been doing this for over two decades with pleasing results.

Hi Joe,
I did my black and red pines 2 to 3 weeks ago here in Canberra.
All except one tree at the collection was also done about 3 weeks ago. One black pine had a slightly weaker lowest branch so we did it about 2 weeks ago and the rest of the tree on Friday. The lowest weak branch has already started budding so by doing the rest of the tree later it should get a good headstart.

For me it depends on the species and on the individual tree. I decandled the last of my pines, a JBP, only yesterday, while the Scots pines were done about 4 - 6 weeks ago, depending on the trees. Can't remember what I did with the rest, I just do the work when it seems time to do it. Probably all wrong! The results ain't too bad, though.

Grant, Sounds like the staggered de-candling on the weak branched tree will do the trick. I wou ld have thought that you Canberra guys would be doing their pruning after us but then i guess you have harsher winters and maybe even shorter seasons. Sydney must be sometime around late Dec or early Jan i am guessing?
Brian, what sort of length do you get on the needles that come out with the seccond flush? I grow medium and small sized trees so i have found thst in order to get the needle length i want i have to prune around now. I am always looking to improve my methods so i would be interested in your results.

Hi Lisa, i only grow radiata, Japanese black and Japanese red pines. I am still trying to get my head around growing the radiatas. As for scotts pines mugos etc i am not really familliar with when and even if you should de-candle them. i have heard people treat them more like White pines and prune rather than de-candle.

Hi Joe,
I decandled a mugo just yesterday and going by last years results it can be done quite OK; although all the europeans don't tend to do it at all; an even shorter and less hot summer I imagine is the reason.
viewtopic.php?f=131&t=6886&hilit=Mugo&start=30 Look at the last post and you will see the results from last year.

I have found if I go later than you do I only get buds and no new candles by autumn.

Depending on tree size, in Canberra early Dec to about now is the time that I have decandled. I pushed a couple this year to see if I can get them a little shorter, but they are still in training.
I think the early Autumn cooling means that we need to decandle a little earlier than the coastal cities.

Ummmm errrr ahhhhhhh, that's what our pollies say when they are in the poop
I think the amount of non words per question determines the answer, in this case 'no'.
