Well when you think you've seen it all think again . With hundreds of Tridents to trim i used a gift from the Father in law to whip them into shape . This has and will save me days and days of work . There is 40 fusing trunks in the bed alone some have 60 odd whips fusing so its like trying to find a needle in a hay stack tracing the long growth back to a terminal to trim it to . With a few quick and precise waves of the magic wand / hedge trimmer , i can now find the respective branches required and remove the rest with ease . It will still take a day or 2 to tidy them up but this has saved the back a lot of unnecessary discomfort .All in all i have hacked and chopped 60 various trunks configurations and basic styled 20 of them , from sumo to 800mm high . A bloody good day all round , this is the first basic trim these have had since planting out this season , this big single trunks up to 100mm plus were collected in winter 2012 .

Hi Meagi , mate i had open slather on 300 of these up to 125mm trunks , and broke my bloody leg just after organizing to dig them up but could find any helpers to get them out . . By the time i got there 7 months later only 30 were left unburnt so i brought them all home , i think 28 of them have survived , all were flat cut like an olive with no roots at all . They should have some good roots happening as these are power fed 'Rustics Plus" every month being in the ground and it turns plants into tree's pretty quick .

Hi Meagi , mate pines and Maples are definitely my favorites , hence why i have so many .The other species just lag behind a bit .

Lovely stock there Alps. top stuff but 2 things come to mind

1/ you are lucky you missed the corn. I would have got that as well probably
2/ Have you ever tried to do it either of these ways ?

Hedge trimmer ? Mate you are getting a bit soft in your old age. Thought you would have waved the brushcutter over them What are you going to do when you go back to work for spare time ?

Hi kc , mate i missed it by that much the corn that is . Mate those rednecks are obviously Facebookers or Twitters looking for 5 minutes of fame , bit like planking , whats the new one creaming or milking .Cheers Alpine

Hi Bougy Fan , mate i have to try the easier softer way , the whipper snipper shakes the trunks and tears and smashes the foliage . Mine doesn't have a blade . Mate spare time is a luxury we all have but don't utilize as we should . Thinking of buying some night vision glasses . I won't hesitate to trim the Japanese Maples with the hedge hog , then there''s the Hornbeams . Luckily they are only young trainers , methods don't matter the end result does . Even took to the Acer Campestre/ Field Maple .

That field maple is that what they call a Canadian

Hi Meagi ,no mate they are a different species .The Canadian comes in several cultivars and has several variants .Canadian Maple - Acer Saccharum , Rubrum , and Sugar maples are the most widely used Canadian Maples over here i would say .The Acer Campestre is called the Field maple or Hedge Maple , very poor growth in pots , this struggled after collecting so i got a bit jacked off and planted it in the ground for some play time . It has a full length inarch graft and a thread graft attached for a bit of fun and practice . The trunk has no taper but it had a sucker on the side so it may become a twin trunk after i finish layering the top off .
