The thing that drew me to this tree was the bark on the trunks as opposied to my first Yamodri dig of a few days ago.(see my other post)

I do have a question. How old does a Olive have to be to have bark like the photos show?

No need to dig olives just chainsaw at ground level. I did this for the first time about two mths ago and put it into 100% perlite so it's easy to move around and things going nuts!! have to give a shout out to ozzy for showing me that one!!!

Hi Irish , are you sure its an olive , looks more like a box thorn even in the growth habit . A close up of the foliage would be good . Never seen an olive wit bark like that , but i haven't seen too many olives either .

I was thinking the same as alpine... Doesn't look like an olive to me. If it is box thorn. I know someone growing them as bonsai and they look awesome. they have everything you'd want in a bonsai, small leaves, gnarly bark, grow fast.

After mutch reading, going through Wickies, govement web sites, a South African Bonsai site, and going on what i saw when removeing this plant. I beleave it to be.

Lycium Ferocissimum.
African Boxthorn.

It did not have any red berries on it when i removed it. Did see one on this site from 2009, but the one i have is a monster just placed it in a grow box. Will take photos of it tomorrow. No leaves on it, just multupal trunks rough bark.

Hi Irish , mate i had dug a few plants only to find they were not what i thought they were . Still it could be a bonsai , all the hard work has been done and noxious weeds are used look at ie, Privets , Hawthorns , Irish Straberry tree , even Radiata Pines are classed as noxious weeds in some area's .

Olives aren't natives either... And they are also noxious weeds.. Haha. I say keep it and Develop yourself a killer box thorn bonsai... If you don't, I'm sure others would love to

Well after 13days it is starting to shoot. Has been watered with seasol twice in that time, and watered twice a day. With the extreme heat that we have had it seems to be very hardy.
