Bonsai Stands

Hi all,

With this cooler weather in Melbourne I thought I would try to make some Bonsai stands, I used some spotted gum that was left over from a decking job, and a 40 year old piece of Australian hardwood for the larger stand.

Please feel free to make any comments, ideas or suggestions on how I can improve these, as I will attempt to make quite a few others with different styles.

Cheers,
Elias

Hi Elias,
I really like the larger of the three stands, to me it has a sense of age about it (is that an oiled finish?) and I quite like the feet. Overall it is fairly minimal in appearance, which appeals to me.

The 2 smaller stands look like they are made from decking. That aside I appreciate the concept of the stand on the left, I once had a very old, hand carved stone stand from Japan that was similar, with chunky feet and similar lines.

The small stand on the right is perhaps a bit long in the legs and I am not sure about the semi-circular profile cut out of the legs. I think that both of the smaller stands would benefit if the tops were finished flatter, I can pick the front to back curvature of both.

Just my opinion though!

really like the big one!!! ;) the little ones look back yard although the shorter one could be improved with smaller feet not so chunky. the other needs to be shorter and better finished. some good ideas there el just need to hone in and refine them. :D

I like the smaller one on the left. It is simple, strong and yet elegant.

Cheers.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the comments, I used Linseed oil to bring out the natural colour of the wood. I will make a few more, and work out ways of doing a few more original designs, there's still much improvement to be done, but I like designing and playing around with ideas.

Cheers,
Elias

Here are a few more, the larger one was made out of one single piece of wood, now I know why they usually make these from several pieces of wood it was very fiddly ...

I like this one, but it took awhile to build:

And a few little ones...

I'm gonna try some more maybe in a hexagon and round shapes, also making heaps of different legs/foots to see what combos look better, any feedback or thoughts on improving these would be appreciated...

Hi Ash,

The little square ones are 13.5 x 13.5 x4 cm, most of rectanlglew ones are around 20-22cm length , width 13.5 cm and heught of 3.5 cm to 4cm height. I've used 4 different bits on the router so far, still learning about what looks better as these are my first few. In future I will try to trace some of my sketches on to the wood and carve them out...

Hi Elias,

How have you been? I missed your later posts in this thread... I like the one that took awhile to build too :)

I hope you have been able to sell them, so that you can build some more?

Best wishes for the New Year 2011 :)

Hi Daiviet,

Been very well thanks, glad you liked the bonsai stands, I did sell quite a few of these, but haven't made more as I've had to focus a bit more on landscaping.
Best wishes to you too for 2011 :tu:
