Does anyone know where to get nice stands/display tables?

Check out eBay for stands. There is one seller in Aus with one listed at the moment and heaps from OS. Kingston from Bonsai Environment stocks them as do the Nesci's at Ray Nesci Bonsai Nursery. You could also ask Leigh from Ledanta Bonsai Nursery and if he doesn't have any in stock he would probably order one in for you. I'm sure most nurseries will have them or have access to them.

Start haunting garage sales and Op Shops. Wooden trays, and they come in a plethora of shapes and sizes, can be turned over, refinished, small feet put on [and you really need feet] and a very good bonsai stand results. I have a wonderful Danish wooden sandwich tray. Underneath I have 2 half corks so the weight of the tree does not bend the wood. It is very long and narrow, ideal for two long and narrow bonsai. A lotus tray that used to carry 4 whatevers plus dip is 'flipped' and now a tray for a medium sized bonsai. The underside of a Danish cheese board is a nice round stand. And on it goes... on to my best... a side of a fruit box with 'Berry' prominently stenciled on and rusty warped nails on 3 sides. Not for your classy pines and maples but great with natives. It only takes imagination, a bit of footwork and some refinishing skills and materials but go for it....

As for small feet... go to hardware store and get those rubber/plastic sticky disks, cut in half and put them on 3 or 4 sides. No one sees them and they just give the tray the necessary elevation. Yes, you can get handles that will work as feet but who wants to buy a $3 castoff and spend $12 or more for feet? Definitely not me. The 'feet' is a length of edging I picked up at a hardware store and painted brown with cheap acrylic from the $2 shop. Got matt estapol for top and gently brushed away as much dirt, trying to minimise removing any of the delicate print. It's fun.... and oddly enough, few people pick it up. They see a stand but they don't 'see' the stand. So don't just consider 'real-actual' stands.... look outside the square. Even small side tables with the legs cut short are great.

I agree with MelaQuin, it just takes a bit of imagination, i too scour the opp shops for wooden trays, i use large wooden beads for the feet, then paint them to the matching colur of the tray, the best match that i can, then all U need do is screw them on, counter sink the bead first so the screw head isnt poking out.Then when all painted and dry put those stick on silicon tabs they use in mirrors or glas tables over the screw head, & wo ll a! Done. aAlso sometimes i paint the tray black and stipple gold paint on the sides of the tray, or even using Rubber stamps, i stamp chineese symbols lightly around the sides. see easy, once you know how. Now that should get your ideas and inspirations going.
