Hey all

A tree for identifying! Not for Bonsai but for Uni (I'm studying Landscape Architecture)

I found out that I have a very shaky hand indeed sorry for the lousy pics!

G'day mate.

This one looks like a "street tree"... yep, definately near the street. Not sure what type of street tree though.

Just kidding mate, sorry, I dont know this one off hand, if no one comes up with anything I will check my books for you.

Hi Boomy, I have spent a bit of time looking through a book I have and the first thing I will say is that there are at least 4 trees that have leaves like your photos. The closest I could find though and I may be wrong is : Betula albo-sinensis (Chinese Birch) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birch It seems to fit the profile except for the fact that the books says the peeled bark is honey-coloured or reddish-maroon whereas yours is near black. Having said that, from what I recall the birch does have a relatively thin thrunk. Anyhow, do a bit of your own research and look at the link I sent you and tell me what you think. If I'm wrong and you find the answer, please let me know.

That looks just like a Toorak Gum to me (Alnus jorulensis) Evergreen Alder. I am surprised you lived to tell the tale.
Don't go planting one at home.

yeah a toss between some kind of birch or alnus too i say. ps either way imo the growth is a bit course, not that this should stop anyone doing bonsai with these.

Yes both the birch and the alder certainly look similar but the the birch seems to have leaves that match a little more in that they are much pointier at the end. If you are located somewhere near Toorak, that might help to identify the species......

Alnus joralensis for me as well

If you are studying Landscape Architecture, best to learn more about what this tree does to pipes underneath and around it. At any rate the tree is a pretty boring subject, there are so many more interesting evergreens out there.

That little alleyway is actually my design site for this semester, hence it would be good to know what type of tree it is and whether its worth keeping, chopping etc (I was even considering applying Bonsai techniques to it as a form of landscape design =S...)

But folio handed in so no more landscape for a month! woot
