Hi ive been trying to research if its possible to grow pines from branch cutting? Ive herad that you cant but stil interested in knowing if it is actually possible?

I've been trying this one since I started bonsai and haven't had a slither of success.

However, recently I tried some JBP candles.

I planted 15 cuttings and I had 3 grow roots.

This is how I did it...

I cut the bottom of the shoots at 45 degrees, ripped off the bottom third of needles, got propagating mix, compacted the soil down hard in each 4x4cm pot.

I dip the cutting in hormone gel, then the powder.

Planted at the end of February last year and kept them in a greenhouse, checked them in october.

Hope this gets you and others trying.

Have you hought about air-layering? Yes this takes longer, but it has much higher success rate than cuttings.
I think there is a thread on here about a JBP air layer which shows its progress. If someone has it bookmarked or knows where to find it could you please provide a link? I think it was Daviet from memory??

I did think about doing air layering but i thought it might of been harder but i guess i can give it a go! Thanks for the info

Hi Mack, how are the roots on those cuttings? are the plants still healthy and do you remember anything about the type of shoot/candle that struck?
Were they more vigorous than those that did not strike?

I have a Kotobuki variety in the ground that I want to take seed from but if I can try some cuttings with some success then why not give it a crack

One of the cuttings (2nd year candle) grew a very fat taproot which I cut off 2/3's, the other 2 (1st year shoots) grew finer roots on them which I left for now.

The 3 cuttings are still very lush and green.

I took the cuttings from a very healthy JBP from the top 1/2 of the tree.


Plus one more thing which might help.

I had success with these growing them in single 4cm2 pots within a seed tray.

The seed tray was filled with soil securing the pots in the tray and acting as a water tray.

I kept the soil tray very wet and misted daily.

I'll be trying all diffrent pines on March 1st.

well after i posted this in January i thought i had nothing to lose and i got my hands on two large pine cuttings. As you can see with the pictures attached that is my best one to date. The other one is doing ok but i dont think it will last long. So how did i do it? Well as soon as it was removed from the tree, i cut it to size i wanted and found a plastic pot that is a little small ( this helped with me keeping the soil moist) then i removed the bottom bark from the branch to allow new roots to grow while it was in the soil. It was showing new shoots 6-7 weeks afterwards, but since winter it ready hasn't progressed since. Well now i just have to wait afew years to see what happens, ill tranfer it to a bigger pot soon as well.

is that a Casurina ?

Looks like casuarina to me too, not a pine.

You could probably root a casuarina cutting the size of a telegraph pole if you wanted.

Important to get species correct when asking for advice, it really makes a difference.

Definitely a Casuarina. But your little cuttings are pine.

The large branch may be pushing buds from stored energy and may have no roots yet.

What mix do you have them in? It looks a little like regu.ar potting mix. Probably not the best to promote root growth!
