I have had this Elm for a long time and have only pruned it when it got out of hand. I have a lot of English elms waiting for styling and i could never create a style for this in my head so it sat. I decided to be radical with it and this is the result. Gotta admit..it is out there.

"out there" that's one way of putting it

It reminds me of an eerie tree from the hobit or something. I had to look at it a couple of times but I like it. It is different. Looks like it has had a tough time which I hope is what you were aiming for. Will be good to see it in leaf.

If you look at the whole tree in detail, it's very haunting IMO

Works for me. The wind-swept style suggests battering conditions, and the trunk gives that same feeling. It will be interesting to see it when it leafs out - you may lose the windswept look in the masses of foliage. Maybe you'll have a lush tree in summer, and a windswept tree in winter.
I'd go for front two. Please keep posting as it matures.

Hi Bodhi , mate the winds blowing in the wrong direction , can you turn it around

. I have always admired wind swept and this one does it for me , being a lefty i would have wired it in the opposite direction

. I too have a few Various elms and some would make for nice wind swept ,showed one off the other day to Fiveoffive , a slanting windswept Ulmus Glabra just need the finer foliage , its got the branches and i need the time to do the hard yards . Nicely created indeed .
Cheers Alpine

Yep Josh, aiming for a battered tree look. The tree is completely hollow and the branches flow in that direction.

I never thought about that FMG,but it does have that appearance.

Thanks Gavin, as always good input, and i will lean towards that front to. A pot will be difficult.

Thanks for helping me strip it Meagi. It kicked my butt to finally do something with this tree.

Me to Alps and i did, but when i spun it around to see what it looked like from the back i realised i had been working on the wrong front.

I agree Moj, leaves will spoil the image and i think heaps of ramification and display it naked.

Hi Bodhi,
For me the magic in this style is that the tree seems to be alive and almost constantly moving while it remains perfectly still. That is what amazes me about this tree. Can anyone else see this or should I just get some more sleep?
Thanks for posting
