This is a tree for my wife which was collected in 2006. It is outside my norm as it is an Graceful elm with beautiful curvature which, i think, reflects a much softer and graceful tree. Collected from my secret hunting ground it was trunk chopped and a new leader and branching over the last six years. It is all there now, just needing to develop branching. The trunks natural euro's do not detract from the grace of this tree and i personally think this will be one of my better trees in the future. I am still unsure of its Japanese pot, which i think is to large. Anyway, hope you like and all critique good or bad welcome. I will post it when it is wired out. I have guests this afternoon and i should be pleased but it will prevent me from wiring

Hi Bodhi , very nice movement and taper . I'm Sure you will do this one justice as well . I was out and about this morning searching a few area's for a winter dig of some Elms , found some worthy candidates while keeping a close eye out for those wiggle sticks in the process .

I think I was too caught up enjoying the elegant lines and character of the trunk, to even realise the slight reverse taper the Uro creates (could just be the picture?).

As you say Bodhi, graceful bones. My feeling is that the pot may not be too big, but just too square, and possibly too dark. Rounded corners, or oval, might be more harmonious. Maybe even a bit more of a lean leftwards?

Thanks Jezz, by the time the branches are are at a state of refinement it wont be a problem.

I am with you on the pot Gavin and maybe a glaze also. Not sure about the lean i will play with it next repot.

Bodhi, the best of this tree is in the base and that first curve. I'm sure you know where I am headed. And for the record if it resulted in a tree 2 feet tall, my suggestion would be the same.

Agreed Pup, I know the pot does not suit now after much looking, not my forte pot tree combo's. I will get on the hunt for one.

Can you get them in contacts. Bonsai is enough geek for me.

If it were mine I'd airlayer it just below the Uro too. Shohin obsessed I may be but only a heathen would chuck the top in the compost.

Really like this tree has a real natural look to it an in time will age well . I see a lot of trunk choppin down low an people chasing shohin style trees saying the tree will be better of in the long run but problem here is there be 1000s look a likes an the the trees that will stand out above the rest are these type of trees . If i see this tree in 10 yrs ill will remember seeing it here great work love it

Updating this tree! I have a great interest in this tree as it, for some reason, grows at a much slower pace than my other Elm's. I dont know why, it just does. Same feeding regime, large pot etc. I am developing it for my Wife as she is the one who discovered it on our dig. All the other people where running around marking their trees and totally ignoring this one and she casually walked over and claimed it. Probably after 30 minutes of people walking past it
Anyway, it is happily growing along, albeit slowly, and it is about to get a prune. All the branching is now there and i am pleased with the placement and now onwards to its refinement. Oh, and a new pot.

I love that first picture in todays update. Very nice. You can visually grow the branches in your mind and you can see it ageing beautifully. Wish I could say the same about me.

I wish my wife was interested in bonsai. The closest I get is my mother in law, who loves to see a good bougy in flower or a group of swampies.

The more I look at it, the more I am wondering if a slight lean to the left might accentuate it a bit and the growth up top tweaked to the right. I Wish 'paint' allowed slight angle changes to see how they look.

I am very lucky in that my Wife is incredibly Artistic and has a wonderful eye. She can point out something that i would miss completely. It took me a little while to get my head around that...and accept her advice. Now that i GET it i ask her for input, a lot.
I am also thinking about the lean.
