OK thanks for your reply, I previously thought it was a mexican white cedar but I really dont know. Here is the tree, im not sure where to start with it. I have been advised to maybe trim back some of the inside foliage to open up the trunk a bit but i dont know where to go from there. Any advise is welcome.
thanks.

Hi Damien , mate it is an unusual plant , one i haven't seen before . If you google search any names you have that will hopefully identify its true name . From there google search it's care requirements , i cant suggest any as like a said i'm not familial with this tree . It looks like it could have the makings for a nice informal upright , then again using the long side branch if its located close to the base there could be a twin trunk or twin trunk Father /Son hiding in there. All these factors have to be considered , if you lack experience simply put it aside until you can locate all the correct info and set about planning its future . "Simple slip potting" could be an option , i think the topic is in WIKI if you search in there you should be able to locate it . Good luck with it .
Cheers Alpine

Once again alpine, thanks for you advice, i have searched for this tree for a number of days on google and the closest i can get is either Mexican White Cedar, or Mexican Cypress so I really dont know. Im going with the cypress because from what i can tell it has some of the characteristics for that species. Time will tell I guess.

G'day Damian.
Have you put the tree up for identification?
Take a number of photo's of the trunk, bark, foliage, including close ups/macro shots it possible.
Then follow the instructions and put it into the ID thread..
This might help.
Cheers,
