Hi guys,

Would appreciate some help identifying the bonsai in the attached photo. I am a beginner, and these are my first plants. I repotted them myself. Next I want to try some wiring when they have settled in their new pots.

Thanks in advance.

Not much to go on Rudi,
I can hardly make out the leaf shape on the little one.
My guesses are:
Picea species (fir tree of some sort)
Chaemecyparis species
The last looks like an olive but I can't be sure from the photo, even with my specs on

Hi Shibui,

Thanks for the reply.

Below some close up photos of two of them. Will take a better photo of the third one as soon as possible.

Note: the one label on the right plant simply said: Olive bonsai. Thank you for confirming that.

First one looks like a Picea Glauca: white spruce. Make good group plantings but heard they are difficult to
work with. Backbud/ dieback problems i think. Have one as our Christmas tree but havent worked on it.

I'd trust that the above two guys know a heck of a lot more than me. I'm just going off my Christmas tree

Right you are, DustyRusty, And so are Bodhi and I. "White spruce" is one of the common names of the Picea alberta conica. We tend to give it the common name "Alberta spruce". Difficult to work with indeed! There is a very beutiful pair at the National Collection here. I'll leave advice on growing this tree as a bonsai to someone else. I got fed up with mine and gave it away.
