Imagine my surprise when I came home tonight after the heavy rain and found the leaves on my Hawthorn, which yesterday were curled up and browned from weeks of heat, had unfurled and were green again! Very glad I did not break off more of those dried out leaves.

Yes great to see rain again it's been months I think can't remember last time we got a good rain !
My hornbeam is loving it nice and green coming back from defoliation

Have been meaning to mention that the day or so after that great rain, all the leaves on my Hawthorn curled up. I'm guessing that the pot I made baked the roots worse than my other commercially produced pots, and I'll now be watching its slow death. However, one local expert has suggested it might be ok as long as the buds are still viable. Either way I will keep up its maintainance until sure it is dead or alive.

Pretty certain the Hawthorn is dead now. Took it out of its pot just now and instead of a pot full of roots, there were very few, mostly near the surface indicating slow draining mix or compacted soil. Most looked brown (dead). The soil has stayed wet for several days, without additonal watering, even in this week of high 30° days. Time to rename this thread 'Death of a Hawthorn'?
