Hi,

Although I'm in Brisbane now, I may be moving to Cairns in the next year or two. I do love those Japanese maples but alas, I'm doubting it'll thrive in Cairns, let alone change colour. Are there any trees suitable to bonsai that will survive and show autumn red/orange/yellow colours in a tropical climate like Cairns?

Liquid Ambar may grow up there - not sure. They probably have the best autumn colour in Brissy. Perhaps the only slight inconvenience of living in the sunshine state

My dad has some terminalia seedlings which he grew from seed about 20 years ago. Funnily enough, they still look like seedlings. I didn't realise at the time but they are beech almond trees? I remember as a kid we used to always bring home seeds from the beech almond trees at school, I specifically remember them getting red leaves. Not sure they would tolerate aggressive trunk chops, etc, since they still look like sticks in pots, the only way to get them remotely looking like bonsai would be aggressive measures, or keep one for the next 100 years. I'm not sure how many he has left, some have died. I'll have to butter him up to get one I think...
