"The Tops Weekend" - A weekend of Fun, Friends, Bonsai Demonstrations, Master classes, Bonsai Display and Critique.


This year our guest presenters are:

ROBERT STEVEN - Indonesia

“I started bonsai in late 1979 or early 1980. At that time I only worked according to my own imagination and taste rather than following the textbook styles. At that time I had not yet joined any bonsai club. It was not until about 1990 that I started to learn more about bonsai from books and local bonsai artists. I chanced upon a wonderful opportunity to learn penjing with Hu Yun Hua in China. My study in China provided me significant enlightenment. After delving deeply into the aesthetics and philosophy of Chinese penjing (the root of bonsai art) and with my practical experience with modern bonsai, I have formulated my own approach to the art. I have dedicated myself to the exploration and development of this art and I hope that others may learn from my journey.” JOE MORGAN-PAYLER - Victoria

“I have been around bonsai since 1999 and I am a member of both the Bonsai Society of Victoria and Bonsai Northwest Inc. In that time, bonsai has become a large part of my life. I have spent my time in bonsai learning from the many knowledgeable people in the Victorian scene and have benefited greatly from the visits from Hirotoshi Saito. More recently I made the jump and studied in Japan under Mr. Urushibata where my passion for bonsai and its related techniques grew exponentially.”
** Brochures and registration forms are hopefully being finished and printed this week - as soon as they are done they will also be made available on the Illawarra Bonsai Society website.

this Red Pine has been ground-grown for the past 10 years
it was planted on a concrete roof tile that has controlled root formation
it has been regularly pruned and was half-dug in recent years to promote the growth of finer roots
(I can't see much sign of that working but it does have plenty of roots)

it was recently dug and potted up
you will note that we resisted the temptation to do anything at all to this stock
we wanted it to be 'as dug' from the ground

two weeks on it has roared back to good health

all ready now for Robert Steven!
