Salix integra ‘Hakuro Nishiki’

Originally purchased as $3 starter stock from Ray Nesci at the Newcastle show November 2010, I struck a number of cuttings from it when I planted it in the ground at the foot of a rubble wall & drainage line around march 2011. The only root work done was a hard chop and removing any downward pointing roots at the time of planting. Since then it has received regular hard cutbacks to 1)keep it under control & 2) generate some interesting shohin material when the mood takes.
I had to dismantle part of the wall to get access to it but thats ok it needs to be rebuilt to better suit the wisteria in its new form.

Given the trunk sat hard against the wall I have never seen this side.. its tantalisingly close...
Dscn0489rz.jpg
So far so good it feel like all the roots run laterally.
Dscn0491rz.jpg
One last root that I just cant get the spade on, no surprise given the rocks either side or the size once I did cut it with the pruners.
Dscn0493rz.jpg
The roots bare we can see whats what, the big root is on the right.
Dscn0495rz.jpg
All trimmed up, I have to be agressive now if its going to fit the final display pot.
Dscn0501rz.jpg
I will have to find just the right piece of rock to fit between the roots to achieve my final angle but I like a challenge.
Dscn0504rz.jpg
Potted up in this oversized Mudlark to grow on a while, the mulch is finely chopped Tillandsia eugeniodes.
Dscn0505rz.jpg
The chop is clearly visible from the large sacrifice branch that was allowed to grow over the last season.
Dscn0507rz.jpg
It currently stands approx 12cm tall by about 18cm wide.

Bit more here:

Being a weeping variety might present a bit of a challenge for a Shohin?

Hey Boics,
Thanks for the link, I wouldnt consider this a weeping variety perse, it also seems to respond well to regular pruning (I have a small hedge about 12"H from it) so fingers crossed it goes ok, if not it can go back in the ground for a few years to become something bigger

Dug the rest, these 2 look ready to have some fun.

2 more will most likely go back in the ground once garden work is done.

Damian, they grow easily from cuttings so anything pruned off is usually stuck back in the ground, they certainly sucker close to the trunk as to if they can get thru the layers of concrete going down on top is anyones guess. I have some planted last year that will be ready for first dig next winter, I also have a batch of rooted cuttings waiting to be planted as well as pushing bigger offcuts from this lot into the ground. Can never have too many trees generating
