Where would you go from here?

Lots of deadwood...

Hi ViBeS , Mate that a nice looking chunky base . If it was mine i would preserve the deadwood with wood hardener and let it grow over a couple of seasons , then make the decision to utilize all of the character it has . You could hack , chop and carve it now , but with something like this its has many possibilities only time will tell where the foliage grows and if it will sprout in a desirable position to suit any pre carving that could be done . Mine is a couple of seasons old and is beginning to rot even after being treated .

Like alpine says, Get wood hardener onto the dead wood ( Earls wood Hardener) and see where it wants to grow then decide
