For the last 6 months have been playing with the idea of using something a little different for a pot & already know how to structure the internals to allow for ease of watering, the visual effect I want to achieve for the surface I just didnt have the tree. It arrived this morning & over the course of a few hours it came together, now to wait for the right time.

Very cool idea That could turn out great!

I'd love to be able to do a kind of 'urban bonsai' that shows nature's struggle against urbanisation... if that makes sense Something I'd love to try, but don't have the skill to pull off just yet.

You may have a problem with wiring, operating systems and compatibility issues, not to mention watering, but what the hell, just think of it as the spark of inspiration... As the house fuses out.

Bonsai that engages with our day-to-day existence is an interesting thought. What we do has very little relation to how we actually live.

You know you've got good nebari when you can plant it in an LCD screen!!!!

What is the actual plan? Is the screen just acting as a pot? Or do you plan to keep the crazy going and twist and turn it around?

If I'm right it's the biggest little ruby I have seen.

I would be concerned about the plastic leaching material as it breaks down since it wouldn't be UV stabilised.

Started from a small cutting given to the grower in the late 80's/early 90's, kept as a stock tree it generated thousands of cuttings before finally being left to its own devices a few years ago. As soon as I saw the roots I fell in love. Nature doesn't struggle against urbanisation, it is man that battles to keep nature at bay, eventually everything we make & do is reclaimed by her, including our bonsai and technology. The case is a Compaq, it isn't UV stabilised & yes will degrade over time, the leachate as far as I have witnessed in the environment will not harm the tree (tho it should provide a good breeding ground for the lichen I plan to seed onto it).

The plan is quite simple, a truly 3d image coming out of a flat screen... execution will determine success.... first to fill the back portion of the case to allow construction of an internal pond under the grill in the top of the case making watering a simple job. The screen space will be made as a flat surface using sandstone, the roots crawling across it & dissappearing into the back. The upper branch will come over the top of the case, the lower will come round under, both as simple arcs, the lower trunk forming the 'bar' section of a 'Q', the tips of both branches will point to the 'Q' on the side of the case

Isi, I know of many bonsai with roots good enough for an LCD tho watering would definitely be a challenge

A very interesting concept, no doubt it wont be to everyones cup to tea but it certainly is getting me to think. If you had an old Apple moniter it could be an iBonsai.....(sorry was there for the taking, Captain Obvious )

I do believe the Ficus rubiginosa var. 'Little Ruby' cultivar was discovered by chance by a Gentleman named Mr Noel Summerell from many seedlings he was growing at the time. I have one myself that I got from him in the 90's.

Its is our differences as much as our shared passions that have kept you & I firm friends for almost 2 decades.

I have a stainless steel back off an early Ipod, always wanted to grow a tree in it but the more likely next combo will be with the stainless steel cage that held some of the electronics at the end of the tube that used to live in this case. Am guessing you didn't notice the "Mack Bonnet" atop my display cupboard at the last tribal get together, another salvage out of this amazing case. I am only sorry I didn't keep the JBL speakers that were part of the original setup, the tree could have had its own accents

I am looking forward to spring & making the idea a reality, we can work it together while you are here setting layers on the willow leaf
