I was helping clear out an old garden at my Nans and she wanted this tree removed so took it with me. No idea if it has potential to be any good but I like the bark so will give it a go. Does anybody know what it is? It is obviously pretty tuff as it was cut down, dug up and nearly bare rooted early winter and still came back. The 750ml seasol bottle is for size.

Looks like an apple to me. I cut down an old apple tree once and left the stump to rot... Instead of that i got new shoots all over the trunk and about 50 suckers from the roots :/ **facepalm** perhaps will do a few clump style apples haha

Definitely not crepe myrtle - I would guess duranta, but will be easier to tell with more leaves.

Thanks for the quick replies
I will get back to you when it has more leaves. When in the ground it was quite a sturdy tree and was growing quickly.

Maybe Bougainvillea
I have one with similar bark at home , and leaves may well be similar too

Hmmm it was quite tree like and I don't remembing there being thorns so that may rule out bougainvillea and duranta? I'll just let it grow for the summer but I will make a move next year. Anyone see a direction with this one? Layer up high or chop it down?

Well looks like Bougy Fan was on the money. With more leaves, and after seeing them in nurseries it looks like this is a duranta. Shoots everywhere and very healthy
Now what to do with it.... Air layer for better roots or cut down to get rid of the big bulbous top bit. where all the cuts are.

If you want a Taller tree, then just clean up the cuts and chops and grow some branching and Apex.
You can always layer it later if you do not like the style

This is a wild shot, but it looks like a lemon tree too me.
