Guys was a nice day today so thought id get some more repotting done and graft a few tridents as well as airlayer a little corky elm. Never liked the lower tree but the top half I think has good potential, anyway I thought it can only improve it . I have learnt with elms especially cork bark you need to create quite a deep wide layer as elms can bridge the gap quite easily. I use the pot method simply as its easy to monitor to water and holds more soil. A few photos showing the tree with the initial layer performed and the finished layer with pot and soil. Going off experience I should be able to separate this time next season. A pic also of a larger cork elm layered 2 years ago into its first bonsai pot. I have high hopes for this one

Looks like you done a good job best of luck looking good already .

This time next year. I would be surprised if its not ready by the start of summer. Any corky barks I have layered have started to show roots after 5/6 weeks . I don't think cutting into the sapwood is a good idea but this should be ok . I would remove it sooner rather that later . Good luck .

You might be right but usually I like the pot to be pretty full with roots b4 separation. As for cutting in too deep I did this on my previous two without issue. one I didn't go so deep with actually bridged over.

I had always thought that the preference is for a tree to have leaves before air layering?
Ie are you setting this too early?

I have found that elms will take from straight cuttings very will also. I actually potted up these 2 from large seiju elm cuttings I took off this large specimen 12 months ago.

Proberly too early but I had been looking at it for awhile now and it got the better of me but its about to break bud soon and I will be using my hothouse and bottom heat to encourage rooting.
