This was collected in2009'ish and has now got enough progress to start styling. Not many options with a stump like this but i am warming to squat, thick trees with lots of branching. it hasnt given me flowers as yet but it should be a nice show when it does. Not a huge fan of Hawthorns but if i cut all the thorns off prior to commencing work on it i save lots of "ouchs"

Hi Diederik
I have a couple of Hawthorns I collected at the start of winter that have great potential. Got any tips?
Cheers
Damian

hi bodhi
I am green with envy . my neighbor has a pauls scarlett in his yard i've tried several times to layer it ( as the miserible wretch won't let me dig it up ) but to no avail. I have now taken some scions and put them in the fridge to graft to two common hawthorn seedlings i prepared last year you are a very lucky man
regards
peterb

Bodhi - if you haven't seen the flowers yet, how do you know they are pink?

I heard it from a guy that told another guy who said...Just kidding, the Owner of the garden i dug it out of told me. I have yet to get one to flower anyway or berry for that matter. It has really great Autumn colour and that is why i bother.

Nice progress so far Diederik! How is the chopped bit looking? Once it was carved out do you think it could be a useful feature?
Regards,
Steven

Thanks Bodhi, I was just being a smart aleck, but I am really interested in this bonsai. I also own a pink flowering hawthorn and plan to work on it this year. Yours has a big advantage in having plenty of branches to pick from and use, alas mine will have but a few. When I start the process I will post.
Thanks for whetting my appetite.
