I picked up this fig off Ebay for $56.
heres a few fotos, i only bought it for the large base, the top aint that good. cheers

Oh Strawbs it hurts looking at this tree here. If I had worked out how I was going to pick it up and went above the $55 I bid at. I would probably cut all the trunks at the highest point you have marked repot in some nice healthy soil with those criss cross roots on the trunk removed. Then leave it be for the year. I would do this in late spring. As for future styling I can't decide on chopping the trunks back as you state or a multi trunk. The trunk you have selected has the least movement but choosing any other takes a fair whack of wood away. I think I would try for a multi trunked style to start with.

Jusdging by the lack of change of level in the Crowny which accompanied the photo, I reckon you should have one or two more and contemplate first.

There are heaps of options with this tree - congtratulations with your buy.

One other option, would be to put it back up for sale
I dont think it will last long

Hi Brett, i see were u are going with the triple trunk, will be repoting into styro box this coming season.
thinking i might just lop the top off and let it grow out as u said. and see what i have to work with.

Absolutely Strawbs, take your time....
Cutting it back to the middle trunk would limit your options

Cut its head(s) off and let it cook for a year - again a great buy with som many options

You could go left or right with this one, probably not directly up though.....

in the photo next to my Sumo, I would use that as the front and use the two trunks to make a great twin trunk.
Take the other branches off in Spring and grow all new. Aerial roots are great, but I would remove the ones that Cross others as they soon bite in and look ordinary

PS I'd remove all the new unwanted shoots on my old sumo to enable the tree's energy to go into the branches and trunk that youre trying to fatten

so i thought id post this quick update on my fig, i got it of evilbay last july moved it to a larger pot and let it settle for a yr
so 2 weeks ago i decided it was time , i defoliated then went to work with the cutters.
there were many crossed branches, it was a mess and moved it to a styro box, with half/half, scoria/standard aust native mix and a s__t load of dynamic lifter
didnt do any root work.
so this is the after defoliation. and after the chop and repot. it has just started shooting out eveywere nice and low on the base so i think i can take a bit more off the top will see.
